The Benefits of Seeing Your Doctor
I have a love-hate relationship with going to the doctor. On the one hand, there is the comfort of seeking expert advice and getting the little brown bag from the pharmacy. Yet on the other hand, there is the knowledge that my doctor's remedies might be short-term solutions to a long-term problem.
My doctor is really great at treating symptoms. It's one of the things that western medicine does best. She's just not always that good at helping me heal. She can give me medication for the pain, but she might not be able to help me create a life plan that eliminates the stressors that caused my headaches in the first place.
That being said, doctors can still provide enormous benefit and be an integral part of your pain-free plan. There is very real value in seeking help, and sometimes a doctor's guidance is just what you need at the right moment.
If you have been wondering if you need to see your doctor, here are a few benefits you can expect to gain from taking this step.
- A proper diagnosis. If you are anything like me, then at some point in your journey, you have made the mistake of googling your symptoms. Super scary, right? Suddenly a little pain turns into a tumor or any number of horrifying, life-threatening conditions. So before you think you're going to die or try treating a terrible illness, it's vital that you get an accurate diagnosis. Your doctor can help you identify what is going on in your body.
- Medication. Sometimes it is just.too.much. You've been in pain for too many days without interruption and you can't get your head above water. In cases like this, it can be helpful to have prescribed medications in your toolbox. Medication can interrupt the pain cycle long enough for you to figure things out. And while pain medication is often a short-term solution, it still plays an important role in your pain-free plan.
- Referrals. Some doctors are better at referrals than other, but if you have one of the good ones, your doctor will refer you to other health professionals and specialists who can help you. With your detailed Health Log and knowledge of your own unique cluster of symptoms, your doctor can help you identify and seek out additional practitioners to be a part of your team.
Before you embark on the pain-free journey, be sure to take the time to see your doctor. Your time is so valuable that you want to make sure you know what you're dealing with right from the start. Once you are armed with this knowledge, you are ready to get started.
