Embarking On The Headache Free Journey
When I was thirty-one, I hit a wall. One night, my husband found me lying on the floor of our bedroom crying. I was trying to stretch the tension out of my neck and shoulders, and I was just so tired of being in pain.
At that point in my life, I had suffered from chronic migraines- as in about 5-6 headaches a week- for an entire decade. I was on a bunch of medications that weren't doing anything apart from causing a whole host of negative side effects. I couldn't find a way to get out of pain.
It was the first time in my life that I felt myself giving up. I wanted so badly to live an amazing life- to thrive and accomplish great things with my time on this planet. Yet I was stuck, lying on the floor in a pool of tears because I was in so much pain.
The thought that kept running through my head was this: How could I be working hand in hand with a neurologist, doing everything he said, and still be in constant, unrelenting pain? I was healthy in every other way, I just happened to get debilitating migraines everyday. What the heck?
My husband sat down with me and we had a long talk. We reviewed everything that I had tried in the last ten years, and evaluated what had worked and what didn't work. Then we explored any other options I hadn't yet attempted, in order to come up with a new plan. It was time to approach my headaches from a different angle.
That was six years ago, and I'm so happy to say that we did end up finding some really life-changing solutions. It started with adopting a gluten-free diet. Then I moved on to systematically altering my lifestyle practices in such a way as to optimize my body's natural resilience and ability to handle stressors without falling into that old cycle of pain.
The changes I made are what I'd like to share with you. But before we jump in, I need to acknowledge that changing my lifestyle so dramatically was really hard. I'd be a big liar if I didn't admit that I have fought these changes tooth and nail for the passed six years. They forced me to make sacrifices I wasn't prepared for.
The good news is that the changes were so completely worth it. Only days after I gave up gluten, I woke up headache free for the first time in years. And you know what? It happened again the day after that, and the day after that. I gave something up, but I got a life in return.
It's really hard to make changes to your lifestyle when you're in debilitating pain. It is only the grit and tenacity and resilience lying at the very bottom of your barrel that will get you through the challenges ahead. When you are in pain, accessing that inner strength seems completely and utterly impossible.
I am here to say that it is not impossible. And if you've been suffering from chronic headaches and have never experimented with your diet and lifestyle, there is a very real possibility that getting out of pain is very much within your reach.
It will be hard, no doubt, but I think we can do it together. I'll give you everything I've learned and we'll give it all we've got.
So let's get started living headache free.
